It’s Open Season

Sometimes I just want to find a stargate into another dimension – an alternate universe- and never return.

A universe where Black families don’t lose their children over the smallest infraction without any chance of rehabilitation. A place where these same children aren’t given to white women who have been convicted of child abuse, but STILL get to adopt. A place where these children aren’t starved and tortured and ultimately murdered by these women. A world where their “better life” was actually and honestly both “better” and “LIFE.” (Emphasis on life)

I want to go to a place where terrified white female managers of Starbucks don’t call the police on Black men sitting peacefully waiting on a friend. Where a swarm of police officers don’t detain these men for hours before being released with a “our bad… well… not really our bad…. but y’all be ok”

I want a place where our courts uphold the rule of law that includes freedom from unlawful search and seizure and/or cruel and unusual punishment (like death sentences for stuff like seatbelt infractions).

I want a place where fourteen year old boys can get lost and ask for directions without being shot at.

I want to go to a place where Black men can work out at LA Fitness and not have to continually show their freedom papers… er… membership pass and have the police called on them and the police find nothing wrong but these men then STILL get kicked out because they questioned the entire episode (and recorded it).

Basically a place where terrified people don’t get to control anything. Cowardice is offense that denies the offender access to any public setting. They also don’t get guns and they don’t get windows to peak out of fearfully. They get to sit in a safe and secure windowless location until they stop being so fucking scared of every damn thing.

But since I can’t find that wormhole, I want this place to be a place where allies are REAL and not performative.

I want y’all to STOP walking on eggshells around racist friends because you don’t want to offend them.

I want y’all to stop supporting white supremacy by your “i just wasn’t comfortable saying anything”

And for crying out loud- STOP attending events at plantations. Just stop it. (One exception- the Whitney Plantation tour is ok but I have to ask for the “real” tour and not the watered down version that doesn’t make certain people uncomfortable)

Where I can trust that you won’t slip back into your comfort zones and your normal everyday life where you don’t think twice about hanging at a Starbucks for a few hours without buying anything or working out or walking down the street or breathing or any other damn thing that seems to irritate a certain group of people who are quick- and I mean QUICK to dial 911.

I want to see real and actual progress on racial issues instead of regression.

IF the so- called allies were actually doing the work, things would be changing. But I’ve been in these “woke” spaces long enough to know that it’s almost always just for show or badges or warm fuzzies. It’s never really just about helping us.

I know because I have to constantly remind y’all to act. Constantly.

And you still come back with excuses on why you can’t do “this” or “that.” Or you try to badge with the 2 or 3 three things you did last year as proof.

I’m not impressed.

Until you start living this 24/7- I’m not impressed.

Until you start making some REAL sacrifices like donating a stack to an organization WITHOUT taking the tax deduction, I’ll never be impressed.

Let me clue you in on something. This is my life 24/7. I have dedicated my life to actually being on the ground and helping where people really need help.

Why do I have to continually beg y’all to send five freaking dollars? Is it really that hard to make a donation so I can do the work that y’all don’t do?

Here’s where you make a donation to TRA Cares- PayPal- tracaresfund@gmail.com

When’s the last time you bailed a stranger out of jail? Or visited someone in jail? Put some money on their books?

I do that stuff all the time.

When is the last time you helped a homeless person significantly? (And without MY prompting)?

When is the last time you paid for a college students books? Helped a person experiencing homelessness keep their pet?

I could literally list a hundred ways that you can help a marginalized person but you get the picture.

I’m getting sick of having these conversations. I don’t think y’all are gonna do anything to really change anything.

Cuz until y’all start doing more, there’s gonna be more Black kids ripped from their homes. More Black bodies at risk under a white gaze.

I hope y’all are listening but I somehow think you’ll just read this and go about your day forget I’ve said any of this.

I have more hope of finding that stargate.

P.S.

And just so you’re really paying attention- every single thing I mentioned about what’s fucked up about this society has happened in the last 30 days….. let that sink in for a minute….

P.S.S. Get off your ass and make a donation. If you don’t want to donate to Cares, then send ME a donation for having to continually prod you into action. Give until it hurts.

My PayPal is sjwoods318@gmail.com
