Letter to Scott Pruitt, Oklahoma State Attorney General

I sent this letter to the AG Scott Pruitt:
I am writing to you to ask you to please stop allowing unscrupulous and questionable adoptions of children from your state to take place. I would like to see you investigate why an ICPC can be retroactively granted. Why are the laws protecting vulnerable children in the state of Oklahoma being circumvented in best case scenarios and ignored at worst? Please help me understand how in a year, I have heard about two children being illegally removed from your state? What is most disheartening and scary about the Baby Deserai Simmons case is that the Bixlers, the couple who have custody of her, have four grown children and two of them are now alleging that their parents were abusive. Where is the protection for Desarai? Why are the children in your state being adopted by strangers when the biological family is available? Furthermore, why has Christy Maldanado and the mother of Babay Deserai not been prosecuted for accepting cash payments and gifts in excess of the amounts allowed by Oklahoma law? It seems like you are protecting these women by allowing to get away with child trafficking. It will open the door for many more abuses of your system. Furthermore, Oklahoma looks weak compared to South Carolina – when you gave “full faith and credit” to their laws, they did not reciprocate. In closing, would you rather sit on your hands and possibly hear later down the line that the system “had failed Baby Desaria” and that she was abused in this home where there is a history of abuse? Surely you would want to investigate this situation rather than allow a child to be hurt when it could’ve been avoided. Thank you, Sara J Heslin- Woods
